Should I own

Intro

Anyone can open a martial art school. All you need is a location, a few pieces of equipment, an impressive looking uniform, some knowledge about martial arts, some martial art skills, and the ability to convince others that you know what you are doing. Then set up a website, Facebook page, and Twitter account and wait for the gullible suckers to walk in the front door.

However, to be successful, you will need to do more. Some phony black belts are good con men and women and are successful within their own neighborhood or city, but for the most part, you must be a legitimate black belt in a legitimate organization and have some business sense for your school to become successful. To make your school a success, you need a mix of product, price, place, and promotion.

High rank does not make you a good instructor and high rank or being a good instructor does not necessarily make you a good business person. However, being a full-time instructor in your own business will certainly help you to become a better instructor. When your livelihood depends on what you say and do and how well your students like you and learn from you, you tend to become an excellent instructor, else you go out of business.

While education, training, and experience in teaching, business, management, etc. is certainly helpful for a martial arts instructor, they are no substitute for being a school owner. Successful school owners know more about teaching a martial art and the business of martial arts than any other martial arts person, no matter their rank.

Think long and hard

Three-quarters of small business startups fail within the first three years; a third in the first six months. Before you attempt to open a martial arts schools, you need to do a lot of research and talk with other school owners about their experiences.
