Jumping and spinning

Intro

Jump-spin techniques are some of the most spectacular techniques seen in traditional martial arts, except for the acrobat, gymnastic stunt kicks that are useless for anything but demonstrations and tournaments that showcase them. Although jump-spin techniques look difficult to perform, if done properly, they are relatively simple.

IMPORTANT: The most important tip to remember in performing a jump-spin technique is to jump and then spin. Don't start spinning first or trying to combine the two. Concentrate on making a perfect high jump, add the spin after the jump fires, and then execute the technique near the end of the spin.

Jumps and spins are covered in more detail in other articles under this topic.

Order of performing jump-spin kicks

Order of performing jump-spin hand attacks

  • For a hand attack, perform the attack.
  • For a jump hand attack, jump high, and then execute the attack.
  • For a spin hand attack, start the spin before the feet even move. For some spin hand attacks, the feet may never move. For example, with training, you can execute a spin back fist or spin elbow and return to guard without the feet leaving the floor.
  • For a jump-spin hand attack, first jump high, then spin, then execute the attack.
