Components of fitness

Intro

Overall fitness is composed of many separate components.

Fitness components

The components of fitness are:
  • Cardio-respiratory endurance. The efficiency with which the body delivers oxygen and nutrients needed for muscular activity and transports waste products from the cells.
  • Muscular strength. The extent to which muscles can exert force by contracting against resistance.
  • Muscular power. The ability to exert maximum muscular contraction instantly in an explosive burst of movement.
  • Muscular endurance. The ability of a muscle or muscle group to perform repeated movements with a sub-maximal force for extended periods.
  • Flexibility. The ability to move the joints (for example, elbow, or knee) or any group of joints through an entire, normal range of motion.Coordination. The ability to integrate the above-listed components so that effective movements are achieved.
  • Agility. The ability to perform a series of explosive power movements in rapid succession in opposing directions.
  • Balance. The ability to control the body's position, either stationary or while moving,
  • Body composition. The amount of body fat you have in comparison to your total body mass.
Improving the first four components will have a positive impact on body composition and will result in less fat. Excessive body fat detracts from the other fitness components, reduces performance, detracts from your appearance, and has a negative effect on your health.

Factors such as speed, agility, muscle power, eye to hand coordination, and eye to foot coordination are classified as components of "motor" fitness. These factors affect your survivability in a conflict or a competition.
